Walk-in Backcountry PJ Claim Sluice and Gold Pan:  Photos, Video and Details

Learn to prospect and mine for gold using a sluice and pan, just like the original prospectors. Enjoy this experience on the banks of a beautiful untamed stream only two miles’ drive, and a short, easy hike, from our gift store. This is a guided trip from start to finish and all equipment for your prospecting adventure, including a sluice box, shovel, and pan, is included! Your knowledgeable and friendly guide will teach you how to set up a sluice system in the creek, and direct you to some possible areas to dig while explaining where best to locate potential deposits of gold. Once you choose your spot, and dig up ore, your guide will teach you how to process the diggings through the sluice. Last, you learn to do a clean out of the sluice, and pan out the concentrates from the cleanout. Gleeful shouts of “eureka,” and old miner crazy dances, are encouraged! Your discovered gold is yours to take home in a vial. Nothing beats that moment of truth when one spots “color” in the pan, an experience many of our guests tell us is unforgettable! Note that this is essentially the same day trip we also offer, only on a road-accessible claim and excludes a raft trip. You may consider purchasing or bringing rubber gloves as your hands will be in and out of a cold mountain stream. And remember this is Alaska, water, snacks, insect repellant, binoculars, hats, gloves, rain gear, warm socks, rubber boots, and/or hip or full waders strongly recommended.
