Gold Prospecting on a wild Alaskan Stream combined with a scenic Kenai river float trip. 8+hrs $289.00
Prospector John's Back Country Prospecting is the only wild stream gold panning and scenic raft trip combination permitted by the United States Forest Service and offered in Alaska. This is truly a one of a kind Alaska experience
Your adventure begins at 8 am at Prospector John's located at mile 48 Sterling Highway in Cooper Landing. Our helpful staff will instruct you on the proper use of the prospecting equipment you will be using on your excursion: the sluice box, the gold pan and the classifier. Next, we will fit you with hip high rubber boots and wet weather gear, as well as a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device. If you have your own hip waders and rain gear that you are comfortable in, we encourage you to wear them.
Your experienced and licensed rafting guide will board you on the raft. Your trip through the scenic Kenai Mountains begins! You will raft approximately one hour, followed by an approximate 1/2 mile hike through the wilderness with your prospector to reach the remote stream we will be prospecting this year. Equipment will be waiting for you. Your search for gold begins!
For approximately four hours, you will be prospecting for gold in this remote setting and a box lunch will be provided. After having secured your gold findings, you will return to the Kenai river and reboard your raft. Now it is time to relax and enjoy the last leg of your journey with a scenic float trip through the wildlife refuge. Have your camera ready! There is every chance for you to see moose, bear, eagles, sheep and mountain goats as well as numerous species of birds and waterfowl. You will also see the confluence of the Russian and Kenai Rivers where the world famous combat fishing for Sockeye (Red) Salmon takes place starting mid June. This picturesque leg of your journey will take approximately two hours. Vans will be waiting at Jim's Landing to escort you back to Prospector John's.
A BOX LUNCH consisting of a sandwich and a cold drink will be provided. When we mail you your booking confirmation, a sandwich menu will be included. You will have a choice of what kind of bread, meat, condiments and extras such as lettuce, tomato and onions that you would like. Your sandwich order will be prepared by a local sandwich shop the morning of your excursion. You will pick out your own snack and drink at Prospector John's shop when you check in at 8 am the morning of your excursion
WHAT TO BRING/HOW TO DRESS
Our Alaskan waters are cool. We suggest you wear long sleeves and long pants. Bring along a jacket, fleece is good. For those of you who wish to keep your hands warm and dry while you pan for gold, we suggest a pair of rubber gloves. A small day pack with an extra pair of dry socks and a pair of dry gloves (not rubber) and insect repellant should be considered. Remember you can always remove extra clothing if you get too warm.
WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT
Everyone has an equal chance of finding color. Most finds will be in the form of gold flake, but small nuggets have been panned by some lucky and sharp-eyed prospectors. A vial will be provided for your gold. You can expect to be mesmerized by the sheer beauty of the Kenai river and the wilderness we will be prospecting in.
Basically, you need to be fit enough to walk a half mile and climb a set of stairs. All ages from 6 to 89 have successfully gone on this trip. Be sure to ask if you have special concerns.
